The following is a quote from a recent presentation in which John Swales laments the excessive standardisation of contemporary academic writing practices:
As academic and research English becomes a lingua franca, both in its forms and in its varieties, as well as in terms of its participants, experimentation in both style and substance should be open to all the bolder-hearted, to all the discontents of excessive and stultifying standardisation, whoever they are and wherever they be!
